MODAL VERBS

Não sabe qual é o verbo certo? Veja quando usar CAN, MUST e SHOULD.

CAN

We use CAN when we are able to do something because of the circumstances we are in.

I can go to London this year.

I can’t go out this evening.

MUST

STRONG OBLIGATION

Statements: we can use “must” to say what is necessary and to give strong advice and orders to yourself or other people.

Plants must get enough water.

I really must stop smoking.

You must be here before 8pm.

MUST + NOT = MUSTN’T

We use MUSTN’T to say that is wrong to do something, or to tell people not to do things.

You mustn’t open this before he gets here.

You mustn’t smoke here.

SHOULD is a weaker form of MUST

That car must be cleaned (IT’S ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY)

That car should be cleaned (IT’D BE A GREAT IDEA)

In questions, should is used for advice and instructions.

Should I go and see the police?

What should we do?

When you are being polite, you should use COULD instead of SHOULD.
